"i’m scared to take time away from my business."

if you ever feel uneasy about taking time away from your business, then this episode of your business hotline is for you!

(for transparency’s sake, i get it. i used to be terrified to do anything that would take me away from being available to my clients. when i was building my first business, i literally answered a 2 am phone call from a nightclub client who was having merchant account issues. note: they also had 24/7 support that was not me.)

this episode’s caller is kale who runs one 7-figure and one 8-figure business and is afraid to let go of control. he admits that he’s working in the business more than on it which we learn is the symptom of a bigger challenge.

despite his ‘success’, he’s not feeling happy or fulfilled.

in this episode we discuss:

  • progress over perfection

  • why  standard operating procedures are essential, no matter your size

  • how his 100% year-over-year growth rate is strangling his team (and an invitation to reimagine success metrics)

  • recognizing what truly is at the root of his drive for growth and the fears that exist (hint: it’s tied to his childhood circumstances… and might be for you, too)

  • beginning to see the businesses as the vehicles to create the time and financial freedom he needs to live the life he wants (which includes moving from new zealand to the states to be with the person he loves)

  • waiting to create systems until forcing functions exist to make them easier

  • why work is like gas and it will fill up whatever space you give it: if you give it no constraints, it takes up all of it

  • the downsides to tying your identity to your business and its success (and decoupling from our culture’s celebration of work addiction)

  • the importance of being in environments with values-aligned people

this episode hits a lot of important points, regardless of the size of your business. you’ll notice that we come in to talk about his business and it moves into his personal life. the two are not separable and the more you look at them together, the better things will go in all areas.

your business won’t outgrow your own personal growth. the work you do internally is directly reflected in your business.

there isn’t a ‘finish line’ to get to. no need to rush as though there is one.

to taking time away from your business, darrah

ps ask yourself: where do you have fears that are holding you back? particularly, where do you have mindsets/beliefs that used to be your drivers for success and are now holding you back?
