reconciling how you see yourself vs how others see you

have you ever had someone reflect their impression of you back to you and you feel shaken by how different their impression was from how you see yourself?

this is really common and can cause unintended consequences (hurt feelings, misunderstanding, lack of effective communication, etc).

in the final episode of season 1 of inprocess, kimberlin and i discuss the chasm between how we view ourselves versus how others see us.

we also talk about the spectrum of vulnerability, why all vulnerability is not created equal, and how i’ve used offering it as a safe hiding place (that looked ‘authentic’ and ‘brave’ from the outside.)

tune in here.

as you listen, i encourage you to ask yourself these questions:

  • where are you able to lean into vulnerability and/or authenticity (noting our updated definition of it in the episode)?

  • where are there places where you’re irresponsibly being either (vulnerable and/or authentic)?

  • where have you learned that people are seeing you differently than you see yourself?

  • are there places you want to let that go?

  • are there places where you see that your impact and intention aren’t matching and you want to make a shift?
