‘you’re on because it’s 11:30, not because you’re ready.’
amy poehler shared the quote in the subject of this email (‘you’re on because it’s 11:30, not because you’re ready.’) in her masterclass reminiscing about her time on SNL.
it reminded me of what seth godin shared in our interview about his commitment to sending an email newsletter daily. he’s done this for over 14 years now, not because he always feels ready or thinks they’re incredible, but because he committed to doing it and continues to make that choice to honor his commitment.
one thing i see so many of us struggle with is waiting for things to feel ready (or close to perfect). it’s great to have high standards. it’s also not great to let those become a safe place behind which to hide and not try new ideas, put out what you’re offering, or otherwise.
from the outside, these actions (or lack of them) might look identical. only you know the difference and distinction between when you’re truly readying something for launch/sharing/etc and/or when you’re tinkering endlessly because you’re scared to put your idea baby out in the world for scrutiny, crickets, or otherwise.
where in your work are you refraining from ‘going on’ despite it ‘being 11:30’?
