it's quitting time (and here's why)

were you raised like i was to believe that "winners never quit and quitters never win"?

allow me to debunk that and tell you instead that:

deciding when to stop is not quitting, it’s a skill.

i hope this is one lesson we do better at teaching future generations because, like most things, it's so much more nuanced than that!

where are you holding back?

is there anywhere in your life where you’re holding off on making a decision or taking action because you’re afraid of making the wrong choice or moving in the wrong direction?

so instead of using the information you have and trusting yourself enough to make the best decision you can given that information, you stall. you make entirely logical excuses about why, too. which makes sense because you can make a rational argument to support whatever your stance is on just about anything (we all can).

this one thing will help you get more consistent referrals

if one of the best ways to grow your business is through referrals (it is), but you don’t have a steady stream of clients, how do you get referrals?

start with your existing network and thoughtfully ask for introductions to people who work with your ideal client. build great relationships with them so that they feel comfortable and enthusiastic to send referrals to you. and, when possible, send them value-add introductions and referrals, too.

you’ve hit your goals– now what?

i recently spoke to a community of accredited investors and was told by the founder that while they’ve all achieved the financial success recqired to get that designation, many in the group ask a question to which many of us can relate:

“there’s got to be more to life than this, right?”

meaning: they’ve achieved many of their goals and in some cases, exceeded anything beyond which they’d dreamed.

this project failed and here's what i learned

i needed to stop waiting for permission, approval, or acceptance from “gatekeepers” to keep going. here’s what i mean:

for the last couple of years, i’ve been working quietly on a tv project (networking in the industry, pitching, and trying to get this show made about something which i so deeply believe needs to be seen).

so many pats on the back and seeming commitments turned into unreturned emails and calls. so many walls built up until “you find a celebrity to get on board”.

it took me way too long to learn this about margin and margins

stepping back to accelerate… hmmm? why might this seemingly counter-intuitive approach be a differentiator in achieving your goals?

because it allows for:

  1. perspective

  2. missing pieces to take shape

  3. a clearer, more creative mind

if you have 4 mins, watch this short video.

in it, i break down how and why you should step back to create margin in your life if you want to grow sustainably (and profitably if you’re running a business).

what 13 years of hindsight has taught me

hindsight is funny and memory isn’t always reliable (just look at data from eyewitness testimonies).

but one thing i know for sure is that when i think from today’s vantage point of 13 years as a business owner back to years 1 through 5, i can say decidedly that i was living in a state of constant adrenaline fatigue and stress.

but i didn’t realize it.

a story about momentum

in a culture that celebrates ‘unicorns’ and ‘overnight success’, i hope you’ll ground yourself in this as you work towards your goals…

if you’ve ever played with dominoes or have seen them, you know this:

it takes a long time to set up the chain, at the precise distance from one another, and with much finesse, until you can finally have that ‘payoff’ moment where you knock over the first one and get to watch some, or all, of them fall.

when we set up this scenario, we know what we’re getting ourselves into.

should you care about finding your passion?

there’s much chatter that goes something like this: ‘find your passion and you’ll never work a day in your life’. and, ‘do what you love and the money will come’.

like most things, i both agree and disagree because there’s a lot more nuance to this conversation (access, privilege, and many other shades of grey to consider).

i deep dive into this conversation with podcaster and author jordan lee dooley and i think it’s worth a listen.

6 questions to ask today to grow your authority

do you ever see other people speaking on stages, publishing books, being featured in the media, building followings, and booking podcasts left and-right and secretly wish that was you? if so, i don’t blame you, because those can be really useful tools to elevate your message, make an impact, and grow your business.

which often leads to the next thoughts of:

  1. how do i go about doing that?

  2. which method(s) do i pursue?

  3. where do i start?

  4. how do i break through?

the answers to these all go back to your goals and strategy… which align? and for which are you best positioned based on your skills, presentation preferences, connections, and so on?

9 strategies to make content creation effective + enjoyable 🎉

it’s likely not news to you that one of the best ways to drive traffic to your business is to create consistent, high-value content.

yet, it’s also likely that doing that consistently and with quality can be/is a challenge.

16 quick tips to become a better networker

why do we forget people whom we meet? why doesn’t every past client refer us business? why do we fail to stay in touch and keep up with people, friend?

if we’re being honest with ourselves, we can relate to one or more of these questions. relationships matter and drive results.
